Benchmo’s tools should work for everyone, including people who use only a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom or high contrast. The site is built to WCAG 2.0 at level AA.
What we have done
- Semantic pages with ordered headings, landmarks and a “skip to content” link.
- Every tool works with a keyboard: the file drop area is a button, option pickers are ordinary radio buttons, and the before/after slider moves with the arrow keys.
- Every field has a label, errors are announced to screen readers, and results that update are announced without moving focus.
- AA color contrast (checked automatically in the light theme; the dark theme uses the same contrast targets), and a visible focus indicator on every control.
- Touch targets of at least 44 pixels on phones, and text that can be enlarged without breaking the layout.
- Animations are reduced when the system’s “reduce motion” setting is on.
How we test
Every page is checked automatically with axe-core against WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 rules at levels A and AA, in desktop and phone layouts, as part of the test suite we run before publishing. We have not yet done structured testing with screen readers or with disabled users. It is planned, and this statement will be updated when it happens.
Known limitations
- Files the tools create (images, PDFs, QR codes and barcodes) carry no accessibility tags or alternative text. A PDF made from images is a picture of each page, not readable text.
- The result preview in the image tools is a visual comparison; the file size, dimensions and savings are also given as text.
- The color picker in the QR tools is the browser’s built-in control, and its accessibility depends on the browser.
