Merge PDF files

Combine PDFs into one file, in the order you want.

Processed on your device. Files are not uploaded.

We merged three PDFs into one in about a quarter of a second: a 3-page statement with a photo (651 KB), a one-page letter (20 KB) and a 2-page report with photos (560 KB). The result had all 6 pages in order and was 9 KB smaller than the three files added up. The text could still be selected and copied, because pages are copied as they are, not redrawn.

To do the same, add your PDFs, put them in order with the arrows, and press Merge.

What merging keeps

Kept exactly Not kept
Page content: text, fonts, images, drawings Bookmarks (the outline)
Selectable and searchable text Form fields (they may stop working)
Page sizes and rotations Encrypted files (they are refused)

Merging never makes anything smaller. If the result is too big for email, run it through Compress PDF; PDFs with photos usually shrink the most.

Questions and answers

Does merging change how the pages look?

No. Pages are copied as they are, with their text, fonts and images, so the merged PDF looks exactly like the originals and its text can still be selected and searched.

How do I change the order?

Use the up and down arrows next to each file. The merged PDF follows the list from top to bottom.

Why can't I merge a password-protected PDF?

The merging library cannot decrypt files, so any encrypted PDF is refused by name, including ones that open without a password and only block editing or printing. Open it in a PDF viewer, save or print it as a new PDF without a password, and add that copy instead.

Are bookmarks and fillable fields kept?

The table of contents (bookmarks) of the original files is not carried over. Fillable form fields may stop being fillable in the merged file; if you need them, fill the forms first.
